Cost of Attendance
For the purposes of determining the level of eligibility or need for financial aid, our office follows the Colorado Commission on Higher Education and federal guidelines to develop an estimated, average Cost Of Attendance (budget) for different student classifications (commuter/non-commuter, undergraduate/graduate, resident/non-resident, qualification for tuition reduction programs, etc.).
Budgets include appropriate figures for tuition and mandatory fees and estimated averages for room and board, books and supplies, transportation, and personal (miscellaneous) expenses. Remember; these are estimated averages; your costs may vary.
For example, take the costs listed below for medical expenses. All students are required to have health insurance. Student A doesn't’t have health insurance coverage so she has to purchase it through UNC at a cost of $1,700 for the academic year. Student B is covered by her parent’s health insurance policy and the cost of it is a portion of the family’s monthly health insurance premium. Although her family may pay more or less than $1,700 per academic for her insurance, the standard $1,700 is used when considering her cost of attendance for financial aid purposes.
The tuition costs for undergraduate Colorado residents budget figures do not include the additional tuition that is offset by the College Opportunity Stipend (COF) for. Be sure to apply for COF at www.unco.edu/cof or you will pay more for tuition.
