Program Overview

The Master of Science in Athletic Training Program at UNC is a challenging two (2) year program in which students develop practical athletic training skills through a clinically focused curriculum.  Enrolled students will have the opportunity to obtain supervised, hands-on clinical experiences with the 19 varsity sport teams at UNC as well as at various affiliate sites potentially including but not limited to professional sport settings, out-patient & hospital based clinic settings, secondary school settings, and various other emerging settings.

Application Materials & Process

The program uses a centralized application service (ATCAS) to receive and process all applications to the program.  Prospective students can find instructions on how to submit an application via ATCAS on the UNC Graduate School admissions page.  Detailed instructions regarding the application process, required elements, and admission processes are provided there.

Once a complete application is submitted via ATCAS, the application materials are imported into the Graduate School admissions process at the University of Northern Colorado.  Once the application materials have been imported, the program area will begin its review of the applicant’s request for admission.

This document outlines the current admission requirements that are specific to the AT program and are over and above those of the standard admission requirements of the UNC Graduate School.

The priority deadline for application to the AT program is February 1 of each year.  All applicants who apply on or before that priority deadline will be reviewed.  Applications received after the priority application deadline will be considered pending program capacity.

Technical Standards

The athletic training program at the University of Northern Colorado is a rigorous and intense program that places specific requirements and demands on the students enrolled in the clinical program. An objective of this program is to prepare graduates to enter a variety of employment settings and to render care to a wide spectrum of individuals engaged in physical activity. The technical standards set by the AT Program establish the essential qualities considered necessary for students admitted to this program to achieve the knowledge, skills, and competencies of an entry-level athletic trainer, as well as meet the expectations of the program's accrediting agency (the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education [CAATE]). All students admitted to the University of Northern Colorado's AT Program must read, understand, and agree to the technical standards document.

Transfer Students

Students transferring from other institutions are encouraged to apply to the AT Program through the UNC Graduate School application. To be eligible for admission, transfer students must meet all of the admission requirements described above. Any AT program required courses completed at other institutions other than prerequisite coursework will not be accepted at this institution. To ensure that you are eligible to apply for admission, students are encouraged to meet with the AT Program faculty prior to transfer to the University. In most cases, transfer students will be admitted into a new cohort of students and must complete the full five (5) semester AT Program. Each transfer situation will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Appeals Process

Consistent with the policy of the UNC Graduate School, students denied admission must reapply to be considered again for admission to the program. There are no appeals of denied admission. Denied admissions are final. There is no limit to the number of times a student may apply to the program.
