Research
-
UNC Collaborative Group Research on Aging: As the principal
investigator, this research is assessing the effect of a balance-based
program of exercise on blood biomarkers of frailty and measurements
of sway in a population of community dwelling adults 70 years
of age and older. Preliminary results have shown a significant
decrease in anterior-posterior sway in participants who had fallen
in the previous year. Blood analyses are in progress.
-
Estrogen Metabolism: As the principal investigator, completed
test results have found a significant relationship between physical
activity and two predominant estrogen metabolites that relate
to risk for breast cancer, 2-hydroxyestrone and 16a-hydroxyestrone. Current
research is focusing on finding the optimal dose of exercise
needed to modulate those metabolites so that ultimately an exercise
prescription can be developed that may provide protection from
breast cancer.
