B.S. Nursing - Second Degree Program
Frequently Asked Questions
When can I apply to the School of Nursing?
Applications are accepted one time per year. Applications are posted on the UNC School of Nursing website in October and completed applications are accepted in January. The due date for application submission is posted on the School of Nursing website. NOTE: You must apply and be accepted to UNC prior to applying to the School of Nursing.
How do I apply to UNC?
You can apply online on the UNC Admissions Office website or in person through the UNC Admissions Office. Even if you have another Bachelor’s degree, apply as an undergraduate pre-nursing major. UNC admissions questions should be directed to the UNC Admissions Office at (970) 351-2881.
Will any of my prerequisites expire?
There is not a time limit on the acceptance of prerequisite courses. However, if you feel your knowledge and comprehension of the material is rusty, we encourage you to retake the course to refresh your knowledge.
If I retake a course which grade will be accepted?
When calculating the GPA for acceptance to the School of Nursing, the higher grade on your transcripts will be used.
Do I need official transcripts with my application?
Yes. You will need official transcripts to verify your last 45 credits of course work, your nursing prerequisite courses, and proof of your previous Bachelor’s degree.
Do I need to have all nursing prerequisite courses completed when I apply?
No. You can still be taking prerequisite courses when you apply, but you must have all of your prerequisites completed by the end of the spring semester in the year you want to begin the program. For example, if you apply in January 2011, all nursing prerequisite courses must be successfully completed by the end of the Spring 2011 semester. Successful completion means earning a grade of C or better in the course (Note: C- is not acceptable).
Does the School of Nursing have a waiting list?
No. We have an alternate list that is generated at the time of application review, which is used if an opening occurs. After classes start, there are no more admissions for that year. You may reapply for the next year.
What do I need to be accepted?
Admissions are based on the following:
- A GPA of 3.0 based on the most recent 45 credit hours completed.
- A grade of C or better is needed in each of the nursing prerequisite courses. C- is not acceptable.
- Screening GPA is calculated using the most recent 45 hours of credit and the nursing prerequisite courses.
- GPAs are then ranked in order from the highest to the lowest.
- Proof of a Certified Nursing Assistant course completion with your application.
- An active Colorado Nursing Assistant Certification when you start the program.
Where can I take the CNA course?
- Many community colleges offer CNA courses. Check the specific community college website for CNA course offerings.
- Northeast Colorado CNA Training Programs List (this is only a partial list of sites offering the CNA course)
Can you substitute an EMT license for a CNA certification?
No. You must have a current Nursing Assistant Certification.
Am I eligible for Financial Aid?
Yes. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid at UNC for information about any grants, loans, or scholarships that you might be eligible for. Phone: (970) 351-2502.
What is the cost of the second degree program?
Please contact the Office of Extended Studies via phone, (970) 351-2944, for up to date information about tuition and fees for the program. Students enrolled in the Second Degree Program are not eligible for Colorado College Opportunity Fund.
Am I eligible for Health Insurance?
All degree seeking undergraduate students with 9 or more credit hours REGARDLESS of the type of class (on campus, off campus, on line) will automatically be charged for the UNC student health insurance plan and the cost will be reflected on the student bill. Students have the option to waive out of the plan by completing the on-line waiver via URSA, showing proof of comparable coverage, prior to the deadline, which is the 10th day of classes. Visit the Student Health Insurance Program page for more information.
Do I need to meet the UNC Liberal Arts Core requirements?
No. UNC accepts the classes from your original Bachelor’s degree.
How do I see an advisor?
Call the school of nursing office to make an appointment. 970-351-2293
I live out of state. How do I find out about what courses I need?
The best place to start is to email firstname.lastname@example.org and attach an unofficial copy of your transcripts. Your transcripts will be reviewed and you will receive a response via e-mail.
Do you accept online submission of applications?
No. The application will be posted on the UNC School of Nursing website; however, the School of Nursing must receive a hard copy of the application.
