M.S. Nursing

Dear Prospective MS FNP Student:

Your interest in the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program is appreciated.

Upon completion of this program you will be prepared to offer primary care to patients across the life span. Your education will prepare you for advanced practice nursing with all the rights and privileges associated with the title of Family Nurse Practitioner and qualify you to apply for national certification.

This program is part-time allowing students the option to continue to work while completing this clinical Master’s program.  Courses are offered in a one day a week schedule (Thursdays).

Applications for the Master’s of Science in Nursing with an FNP Emphasis or post Master’s certificate program should be submitted to the Graduate School and to the School of Nursing (SON). Once your file is completed, it will be reviewed by the School of Nursing faculty. (If you are applying to the post Master’s certificate program you must have a Masters of Science in Nursing). Students who are accepted into the program will be notified before the start of Fall semester classes. Students are admitted to Fall semester starts only.  When admitted, students must complete a background and drug screen at www.uncobackgroundcheck.com.

School of Nursing admission criteria are as follows:

  1. Bachelor of Science from an NLN or CCNE accredited institution with an upper division major in nursing.

  2. Current Colorado Registered Nurse (RN) license or eligibility for Colorado licensure as a registered nurse. (copy of license required)

  3. Minimum grade point average of 3.0 at the baccalaureate level.

  4. Two letters of reference. One letter should address your ability to practice as an independent practitioner.

  5. A statement of career goals.

You will complete a minimum of 720 hours in clinical practicums during the program and you must carry student nurse practitioner malpractice insurance while in the clinical courses (NURS 610, 640, 645, 650, and 680). You must obtain your own clinical preceptors and will need a signed agreement with those preceptors (licensed physician, nurse practitioner, nurse midwife or physician assistant). At least 200 of your total 720 clinical hours must be with a nurse practitioner. If you have further questions after thoroughly reviewing the website pages, please call the School of Nursing main office (970-351-2295).
