Required Clearances for Nursing Programs

Background Check

• The UNC School of Nursing requires a one-time Background Check (FBI Fingerprint Search) for all newly admitted students.
• Allow 4 to 6 weeks to process your Background Check (FBI Fingerprint Search).
• This clearance may be obtained from American DataBank.
• To order, download the Instruction Letter from American DataBank’s web site and follow the directions carefully. (Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view this Instruction Letter. To obtain Adobe Acrobat Reader free of charge, click here.)
• After payment by student, American DataBank will mail to the student all the necessary documents to complete the Background Check (FBI Fingerprint Search).
• One form from American DataBank requires the signature and seal of a notary public. For a list of notaries on the UNC campus, click here. Also, banks, schools, and other offices may have notaries for a small fee. The School of Nursing will soon have notaries on staff in the Nursing office at Gunter Hall room 3080.
• Fingerprints may be obtained at law-enforcement offices, including the UNC Police Department. Be sure to check the times that fingerprinting is available.

Drug Screen

• The UNC School of Nursing requires a one-time 10-Panel Drug Screen for all newly admitted students.
• This clearance may be obtained from American DataBank.
• To order, download the Instruction Letter from American DataBank’s web site and follow the directions carefully. (Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view this Instruction Letter. To obtain Adobe Acrobat Reader free of charge, click here.)
• After payment by student, American DataBank will mail to the student all the necessary documents, including the Forensic Drug Testing Custody and Control Form, and a list of approved facilities to complete the Drug Screen.
