BACS 380 025 - Network and Data Communication Systems - 3 credits

Required textbook: The required textbook is Introduction to Networking with Network+, by Timothy Pintello. There is also a required online training solution called Network+ LabSim offered by TestOut. How to buy a license to the this solution will be discussed in class.
Catalog course description: This is an activity course involving the study of data communications and networks. Topics
include history, media, hardware, software, standards, networks, analysis and design, distributed processing and network management.
As a result of successfully completing this course, students will:
- Learn a professional, working data communications vocabulary.
- Acquire a technical foundation in data communications hardware, software, and concepts.
- Understand the fundamentals of data communications system design and evaluation.
- Acquire fundamental knowledge of local, value added, and wide area networks.
- Become more qualified for more advanced education in the data communications field.
This course will cover the following topics:
- Business majors/minors and Software Engineering majors only.
- Juniors or above.

Grading: Students will earn a grade based on quizzes, exams, participation in classes and labs, and a comprehensive final exam. The grade breakdown is:
The grading scale is "no worse than" ("+" or "-" grades MAY be given to marginal performance, but do not expect them):
- Exams: 40% (two exams, held in class on Thursday, October 3, 2013, and Tuesday, November 26, 2013)
- Comprehensive final exam: 25% (held in class on Thursday, December 12, 2013, 10:45pm - 1:15pm)
- Quizzes: 25% (given roughly weekly after completing each major topic, the lowest grade will be dropped)
- Class Participation: 10%
- A = 90% through 100% and above
- B = 80% through 89.99%
- C = 70% through 79.99%
- D = 60% through 69.99%
- F = Less than 59.99%
Academic Integrity/Academic Dishonesty: I expect students to be honest
and not cheat on their assignments, projects, and exams. The exams must be completed
without giving or accepting assistance from other students. Any source code
copied from another source must be credited as such. Open source software used
must maintain all headers and other information as required by the open source
license used. I expect you to know the University's policies on student conduct,
academic dishonesty, etc. UNC's policies and recommendations for academic misconduct will be followed. For additional information, please see the Dean of Student's website, Student Handbook link and the current catalog.
- If you must submit work late you need to talk to me at least one-week
before the due date in question. Otherwise, late work cannot be
accepted except in cases of verifiable emergencies.
- You are expected to attend all classes. If you miss class, you are responsible for any material covered during your absence. Your attendance and participation directly influences your grade. You will be expected to intelligently participate in class discussions, answer questions, share insights and lead case discussions of information technology concepts. I may choose to track attendance.
- We will be observing all university policies regarding
religious holidays and disability policies. Any student requesting disability accommodation for this class must inform the instructor giving appropriate notice. - Incomplete ("I") grades will only be given in the case of severe hardship
including verifiable medical emergencies or legal troubles. Simply being
"overloaded" and unable to complete your work is not grounds for an "I"

Networking Night - Student Attendance Requirement:
MCB is hosting a required networking night for junior and senior business majors with the goal of developing networking skills in a professional setting. MCB as well as local, state, and regional businesses will invest substantial time and energy to maximize the benefit of this event, but student participation is absolutely essential for this event to succeed. Accordingly, student attendance is required, and it is important for students to make every possible effort to attend this event including altering travel plans or work schedules to avoid conflicts. MCB will adjust business class schedules to avoid conflicts. If an irresolvable conflict or emergency prevents a student from attending the networking night, the student should see the department chair in his/her emphasis area, and the department chair will provide an alternate networking assignment. The alternate assignment will require more time and effort than the networking night in order to further motivate event attendance. The networking night, with your help, should be enlightening, exciting, and fun, and should open many new opportunities.
Networking Night will be held October 7, 2013 from 5:30pm – 8:00pm at the UC.
