“Differential Equations Students’ Concept Images of Parameter”
During this seminar, I will discuss my study of two students’ concept images of parameter in a multi-representational differential equations course.  The concept images of these students were analyzed by using Sfard’s educational theory of interiorization, condensation, and reification. From the mathematics involved in understanding parameter, three prerequisites were identified: function, variable, and derivative.  The students’ concept images of these prerequisites will be discussed in relation to their concept images of parameter.  The discussion of the concept images for the prerequisite concepts and the concept of parameter will also involve a discussion of analytic, graphic, and numeric representations.
