Job Summary:
Assistant Professor, tenure track, 9-month appointment. Undergraduate and graduate teaching and advising. Teach ~3 classes per semester, including general sciences courses in meteorology, and upper level courses for meteorology and earth science majors. Conduct research to advance the field and inspire students. Provide service to program, school, college, university, and profession.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must have completed a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology or a closely related field. Preference will be given to candidates who will have earned the degree by the start date. ABDs will be considered if the dissertation proposal has been successfully defended and the doctorate is received within one (1) year of the starting date. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate potential for teaching excellence in traditional and online settings, scholarly activity, ability to secure outside funding, and an interest in serving the profession. Successful candidates will also have demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: Physical Meteorology, Remote Sensing, Data Assimilation, Atmospheric Instrumentation, Boundary Layer or Tropical Meteorology.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to applicants who have:
- Authored or co-authored refereed journal publications related to atmospheric sciences
- Relevant field experience
- Experience teaching, and a positive classroom persona which promotes student interests
- Ability to attract research funding and collaborate with local/regional facilities and programs
- Evidence of collegiality and community engagement
Salary and Benefits:
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits available include health, life, and dental insurance, as well as a selection of several defined contribution retirement programs. Dependents and spouses of UNC employees who are employed as 0.5 FTE or above are entitled to and eligible for Dependent Tuition Grants. These tuition grants will cover in-state tuition charges. Further requirements may exist. Other benefits may be available based on position. Opportunities for summer instruction may be available.
