Welcome
Welcome to the web site for the Criminal Justice Program at the University of Northern Colorado. The program was established in Fall 2003 and we are pleased to offer students a BA degree in Criminal Justice that reflects a liberal arts tradition while providing curricular content appropriate for persons seeking careers or information about law, crime, police, courts, corrections, and victimology.
At this web site you will find information about our program (both major and minor), our students, alumni, and faculty, as well as helpful material on course offerings, financial assistance, and careers.
Our student organization, the Criminal Justice Society, meets every Thursday at 6:00 pm during the Fall 2006 semester, in Gunter Hall 1150. The CJS officers can be reached via email at: cjsociety@blue.unco.edu
News & Announcements
- Experts place false grave sites, plastic bones during class for investigators
- Laura Carly Villa, a Senior Criminal Justice Major was selected for The Stryker Institute for Leadership Development. The Institute was launched at UNC in the Fall of 2001 with the generosity of the Ronda E. Stryker and William D. Johnston Foundation and with firm support from the University. The Institute's purpose is to advance the leadership development of talented students from under-represented groups, particularly those who are women, ethnic persons and non-traditional-aged students, and individuals with substantial financial need. The Institute provides students with leadership seminars, an accompanying educational scholarship, opportunities to exercise their emerging leadership skills, and a sustained program of support. Staff members associated with the Institute believe that students' potential for leadership can be strengthened by recognizing the talents they already possess and challenging them to build on these abilities.
Student Profiles
During summer 2006, Shanell Sanchez won a 2nd place national award from the McNair National Conference for her research on After-School programs in the Greeley-6 School District. Ms. Sanchez is a McNair Scholar at UNC with Dr. Fitzpatrick as her mentor, and will graduate in May 2007.
Kristi Hamacher is a senior majoring in Criminal Justice with a minor in Sociology of Social Inequality. She graduated from Chaparral High School in Parker, CO. At this point, Ms. Hamacher is not sure what she plans to do with the future, but she hopes her career will involve accident investigation. In April 2006, she was hired by the Greeley Police Department in the Community Outreach Program as an assistant, after working there as an intern. During May 2006, she traveled to the British Isles in the NHS Study Abroad program to learn about the English criminal justice system.
Alumni Profile
We also plan to profile several of our alums each
semester. Again, please let Dr.
