Notes from a Student Abroad
June 5, 2009

The National Palace of Spain, located atop one of the highest points in Barcelona, is currently undergoing a major renovation. The palace is home to the National Museum of Catalonian Art and is considered the most important center for Romanesque Art in the world. Photo by Christina Romero.
Christina Romero is one of many University of Northern Colorado students taking advantage of study abroad opportunities this summer. Romero, who is double-majoring in Journalism and Communication Studies, is spending three weeks in and around Barcelona, Spain. In addition to blogging about her experiences at http://globalstudent10.wordpress.com, she’s provided the following insight into her experience so far.
I knew I was going to travel abroad, but I never expected it to come so soon. I never thought that I would actually be able to accomplish my goal, but I have and I am getting college credit as well as the experience of my life.
With my blog I want to do more than just talk about how different life is on the other side of the world. I want to encourage more people to travel abroad and to live vicariously through my experiences while I am in Barcelona, Spain.
I have blog entries about studying abroad, packing and getting ready to travel abroad, as well as information about Catalonia and Barcelona. There are also pictures with most of my entries so that others can see what I see. The pictures don’t do any justice to what I have been witnessing with my own eyes.
I have been in Barcelona for a week now and have learned so much about the culture and history of Catalonia and Barcelona. There are a lot of things that I like and there are some things I have found hard to understand, but with two more weeks ahead, I’m sure I’ll come to appreciate everything.
The architecture is gorgeous, the food is delicious and as long as you don’t think about the dollar being less in value than the euro, everything is pretty affordable, but there are some tourist trap areas.
I am studying abroad through the Communication Studies program and learning about intercultural communication as well as group communication because this is a group program. You can learn how to get a passport, select the right study abroad program and see what my classmates and I have been up to.
Because technology is limited I have been working on my blog at an Internet cafe, so my posts may be sporadic, but I will do my best to post every other day. Comments are welcomed and you do not need an account with the Web site to leave a comment, just an e-mail address. Hope you enjoy reading about International Insight at http://globalstudent10.wordpress.com.
