Writing Project Prepares Guide to Common Book

For the past two years, UNC has sponsored a common book for all first year students to promote a shared learning experience and introduce them to college study. For 2009-2010, UNC selected "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortenson and David Relin.

During the summer 2009, fifteen Fellows of the Rocky Mountain Writing Project collaborated with the Office of the Provost, the School of English Language & Literature, and University Libraries to produce the "Readers* & Teachers* Companion to Three Cups of Tea". The project was led by Dr. Jeri Kraver, professor of English, and Teresa Sellmer, the project*s director.

The Companion provides resources to enhance the reading experience and is intended for both teachers and casual readers. It includes lesson plans on Pakistani culture and the regions described in the book. It also contains various questions and prompts for readers to broaden their interaction with the text.

In addition to the Companion, which is available online, the Fellows also provided a list of web-based resources and supplimental readings. The lesson plans contained in the Companion, primarily designed for secondary and college students, can be adapted for younger children as well.
