UNC Professor Awarded Bioscience Grant

University of Northern Colorado Biological Sciences professor Stephen Mackessy on Friday received a $53,260 bioscience grant from the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade to conduct a study that will pave the way for developing drugs to treat a variety of diseases.

Mackessy will oversee the project to evaluate peptides and protein enzymes in snake venoms to identify potential therapeutic applications in treating diseases such as strokes, cancer, diabetes and potentially other maladies.

Mackessy's project was one of 27 selected and funded by the Bioscience Discovery Evaluation Grant Program of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade. The purpose of the new program is to improve and expand the evaluation of bioscience discoveries at research institutions with the intent of accelerating the development of new products and services.
