Four University of Northern Colorado alumni have front-row seats in New Jersey this week as the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks prepare for Super Bowl XLVIII, and on Sunday, some of them will be on the sidelines.
Antonopulos, the Bronco's head athletic trainer, will be working his seventh Super Bowl since joining the team in 1976. No other head athletic trainer in the NFL has served longer.
"Greek," as he's known around the NFL and among friends, earned his bachelor's degree from UNC in 1972 and his master's in 1973. Both are in Health and Physical Education. His connection with UNC continued from 1982-2002 when the UNC campus served as the team's training camp location.
Read more about Antonopoulos' storied career in a profile in the spring/summer 2010 issue of Northern Vision, UNC's magazine for alumni and friends of the university.
Bakke has been the Broncos team photographer since 1986, making this his sixth Super Bowl with the team. He earned his bachelor's degree in Journalism from UNC in 1973.
Bakke, who also works as a freelance photographer, was one of the former photography students invited by Professor Emeritus Dennis Morimoto to exhibit their work in an exhibition celebrating Morimoto's retirement last year. Proceeds from the sale of the photos benefited a scholarship fund for visual arts students started by Morimoto.
One of Bakke's contributions to the exhibit, a framed 28-inch wide, 24-inch high version of the photo below is available for purchase for $600 by contacting Director of UNC Galleries Joan Shannon-Miller, 970-351-2184.
Bakke paid tribute to Morimoto in a June 9, 2013, blog entry. Some of his up-close-and-personal photos of the Broncos can be viewed his Field Level Photos website.
Snyder is the Broncos team nutrition manager, a position he was offered in 2010 after serving a year-long internship with the team before his 2009 graduation from UNC with a bachelor's degree in Dietetics.
He's responsible for dietary supplement evaluations, one-on-one individual consultations, training table menu development, individual meal plans, pre- and post-game meals, halftime and post-game snacks, airplane meals, sideline hydration and nutrition, and management of the team's food service operation.
Snyder returns to UNC once or twice a year as a guest lecturer.
Find out how Snyder feeds the Broncos during training camp in this 9News story. Read how he feeds team members when they're traveling in this Denver Post story.
Werder, who graduated from UNC in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in Mass Media, will be covering his 28th Super Bowl.
Werder will be covering Sunday's game for ESPN's NFL Insider. Since joining the network in 1998, he's become a staple in its NFL coverage, contributing to shows such as SportsCenter, NFL Live, Sunday NFL Countdown and Monday Night Countdown.
Before joining ESPN he covered Super Bowls for CNN and several publications, including the Dallas Morning News, the Boulder Daily Camera and Sports Illustrated.
Werder talks about what it's like to cover the Super Bowl in a roundtable discussion on Sports Illustrated's website.
