University of Northern Colorado's Board of Trustees on Friday, Nov. 15, discussed UNC's academic strategic plan, fall 2013 enrollment and the governor's proposed budget, in addition to recognizing departing trustee Dee St. Cyr.
- Innovation@UNC: Provost Robbyn Wacker presented an overview of the initiative that will provide $1 million in funding over two years for academic innovations that have the capacity to be "game-changers." Read more about the initiative at www.unco.edu/innovation
- Proposed state budget: UNC President Kay Norton outlined what Gov. John Hickenlooper's proposed budget would mean for UNC. The 2014-15 proposal calls for an additional $100 million in state funding for higher education. The 11 percent across-the-board increase in operating dollars would equate to a $3.7 million increase in state funding to UNC's operating budget - currently $33.6 million — which would bring UNC to 1999 funding levels. "We certainly appreciate the work the lieutenant governor and governor have made to attempt to make a significant reinvestment in higher education." More details on the budget request (PDF).
- Fall 2013 enrollment: Wacker and Senior Vice President of Finance and Administration Michelle Quinn discussed fall enrollment following the university's official fall census date Sept. 9. UNC's overall enrollment increased from 11,865 on the first day of classes to 12,084 on the census date. While total enrollment was down 3 percent from Fall 2012, undergraduate students identifying with an ethnic minority group increased 2 percent (25 percent), international students increased (undergraduates by 6 percent and graduate students by 23 percent) and 36 percent of undergraduates are the first in their family to attend college. The census data is available at: www.unco.edu/iras/enrollment.html
- Resolution for St. Cyr: Trustees honored their colleague, whose four-year term ends Dec. 31, with a resolution recognizing her commitment to the board. Both Secretary and General Counsel Dan Satriana and APASS director Alethea Stovall shared background on St. Cyr, a nationally known advocate for American Indian initiatives.
