Snow-related closures: Who makes the decision, when and why?

The emergency preparedness team consists of representatives from Facilities, Landscaping and Grounds, Finance & Administration, Environment Health & Safety and UNC Police. They work together to monitor conditions and make informed decisions on the university's operating status. Factors that would influence a closure include severe conditions that make it impossible to keep campus sidewalks, entryways and parking lots clear, and impassable roads in the immediate area (UNC's off-campus centers in Denver, Loveland and Colorado Springs make choices based on conditions in their area).

In the event of a severe overnight storm, the operating status of the university is available at www.unco.edu by 6:30 a.m.

As a reminder, closures are communicated the following ways:

  • Online: http://www.unco.edu and http://emergency.unco.edu;
  • By Phone: The inclement weather phone line, 970-351-4100;
  • Media: Closures are reported to area media, including Denver TV stations;
  • E-Alerts: Notifications of closures are sent to campus phones and computers through voice, e-mail and text messages and to subscribed cell phones through text and voice messages from UNC's Emergency Alert system. To find out how to sign up your cell phone, visit http://www.unco.edu/alerts/signup.html.

Please remember that calling the UNC Police Department to confirm the university operating status is not necessary.
