University of Northern Colorado graduate student Belkasim Khameiss was recognized by the Colorado Scientific Society for his research on marine reefs and age dating of tertiary sections in northeastern Libya.
Khameiss, a master's degree candidate in Earth Sciences, presented his paper during the CSC's annual graduate student competition Oct. 18. The CSS is the oldest scientific organization in Colorado, founded in 1882. According to current CSS president Pete Modreski, Khameiss is the first Middle Eastern student to win the award from CSS.
The organization selected Khameiss' paper for the fourth-place prize, which included $50 and CSC membership through 2013.
