Six UNC Faculty to Live in Residence Halls

June 17, 2009

Six faculty at the University of Northern Colorado will move in alongside students this fall as part of an inaugural program offered by UNC Housing & Residence Life.

Eighteen applied for the six available apartments set aside in campus residence halls for the Faculty in Residence program. Each will be assigned to a different residence hall for the school year. Faculty in Residence for 2009-10 are:

- Mary Angeline, instructor of English and chair of the Rosenberry Writers Conference.
- Matt Birnbaum, assistant professor, Higher Education and Student Affairs Leadership.
- Lyda Ellis, instruction librarian and assistant professor of University Libraries.
- Diane Gaede, associate professor, Recreation and Tourism.
- Lee Anne Peck, associate professor, Journalism and Mass Communications.
- Gary Swanson, Mildred S. Hansen Endowed Chair in Journalism.

Program faculty receive an apartment and small-meal plan in exchange for time spent with students in the residence halls. The program, which will continue next year, is funded through a reallocation made possible by hall restructuring that included eliminating an assistant hall director position.

"The program provides opportunities for unique relationships and adds a vibrant social and intellectual community outside of the classroom," said Jenna Finley, director of UNC Residence Life. "It’s also another way to showcase our approachable faculty who serve as professional and personal role models to our students."

About 2,900 students, mostly freshmen, live in 16 residence halls during the fall and spring semesters.
