May 30, 2007
The University of Northern Colorado has named Dr. Abe Harraf as the Senior Vice President and Provost after a national search.
Harraf is a veteran of higher education with more than two decades of experience in academic leadership.
“Dr. Harraf brings to the university a wealth of experience in academia, having served as a successful chief academic officer at two respected institutions,” said President Kay Norton. “His international perspective will be invaluable in keeping us aligned with our academic mission.”
For the past five years, Harraf has led Southern Utah University in Cedar City as Provost and Professor of Management. There he has overseen efforts that secured successful accreditations, helped increase the number of terminally-qualified faculty, established relationships with foreign institutions through study-abroad programs, implemented a number of academic support initiatives for retaining students and assisted in raising funds for construction and renovation of campus buildings.
“I’m honored that the University of Northern Colorado has bestowed trust upon me as the institution’s chief academic officer,” Harraf said. “I’m looking forward to meeting faculty, staff and students and working together on opportunities that lie ahead for the university.”
Harraf previously spent 18 years at Embry Riddle University, where as chief academic officer of the Daytona Beach campus, he helped Aerospace Engineering achieve national recognition as a top-tier program. In addition to being the Chief Academic Officer at Daytona Beach Campus, Harraf also held positions at Embry Riddle as Dean of Campus, Professor of Management and Department Chair.
Harraf earned a Ph.D. in Economics from Utah State University in Logan; M.Ed. in Guidance and Counseling and M.B.A. from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas; and B.A. in English Literature from the College of Translation in Iran. He and his wife, Tabby, have been married 30 years. They have two grown daughters.
Harraf will replace Allen Huang, who will retire June 30. Harraf will begin working at the University of Northern Colorado on July 23.
