Baird's research includes field work and focuses on structural geology of high-grade metamorphic terrains and the tectonics that led to their deformation and metamorphism. A recent project reconstructed the deformation history of the northwest Adirondack Lowlands near the St. Lawrence River in northwestern New York. His other projects are ongoing in the Tarfala Valley of northern Sweden, the Colorado Front Range, and in the Carthage-Colton Mylonite Zone near Harrisville, New York.
