The annual Bears Pay It Forward neighborhood clean-up Saturday, April 27, will include a joint celebration of Arbor Day with the city of Greeley and planting of several trees in honor of UNC's inaugural designation as a Tree Campus USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
The Arbor Day celebration will begin at 10 a.m. south of Frasier Hall near the intersection of 10th Avenue and 17th Street. Attendees will receive seedlings, and refreshments will be provided by the city's Forestry Program.
Tree Campus USA designation is given to campuses with effective forest management that engages students and staff in conservation goals.
During the Bears Pay It Forward from 9 a.m.-noon, community members and UNC students, faculty and staff will work together to clean up some of the more neglected areas in Greeley neighborhoods. Community partners will supply the tools (rakes, hoes, hoses, trash bags and gloves). Lunch will be provided for everyone who participates.

The College of Performing and Visual Arts invites the campus community to help recognize four retirees at a reception from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, in Frasier 90. The four retirees are: Connie Bethards, School of Art and Design; Richard Fuchs, School of Music; Lesley Manring, School of Music; and Dennis Morimoto, School of Art and Design.
The Office of Sponsored Programs will hold office hours in Ross 2570 Wednesday, April 24, from 1-4 p.m. and in Candelaria 1100 Thursday, April 25, from 1-4 p.m. The focus of Wednesday's session will be budgets and post-award issues,and Thursday's focus will be pre-award issues, but all questions related to sponsored programs are welcome.
Mona Castor will be available for faculty and staff Wednesday and Arlene Hansen will be available Thursday.
Provost Robbyn Wacker has announced this year's Academic Excellence Awards recipients, who will be recognized at the annual Academic Excellence Reception from 3-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, in the University Center Panorama room. Presentations will begin around 3:30 p.m. RSVPs are not required for the reception, which is open to all faculty and staff. The recipients are:
Criteria for the awards include a thorough knowledge of the academic or professional field, ability to communicate that knowledge in an effective and organized manner, ability to create a positive learning environment, demonstration of respect and concern for students, ability to inspire enthusiasm for learning and high expectations for students' performance.
Tickets for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program's annual Quilt Raffle are available for purchase now through May 15 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in the RSVP office in Brown Hall.
Tickets to win the queen-size quilt made by RSVP volunteers cost $1 each, 6 for $5, 12 for $10, 18 for $15 and 24 for $20. Cash or check only.
Proceeds benefit RSVP services.
Information Management and Technology will host an open form about IT security from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, in Michener Library's Lindou Auditorium. Stop by to ask your questions about smartphone security, sensitive information handling, data that's considered sensitive, Facebook and Twitter security, or any other IT security-related issues.
