The Colorado Council of Teachers of Math recognized a University of Northern Colorado employee for his contributions working with educators to improve mathematics learning for students.
Jerry Overmyer, outreach coordinator for UNC's Mathematics and Science Teaching Institute, received the council's leadership award for 2013.
Overmyer's work at UNC focuses on researching the flipped learning model in the teaching and learning of mathematics. Teachers using the model post online videos of lectures, and then in class, questions are answered and homework completed.
Overmyer created and moderates the Flipped Learning Network Ning, a network with more than 15,000 members to help teachers learn from each other about screen casting in education. Through his work, he continues to add to the knowledge base around flipped classrooms and the impact of such a classroom on student achievement.
Awarded a grant from the Colorado Department of Higher Education, Overmyer has been able to offer a comprehensive professional development program to high school mathematics teachers and provide them with tools and technology addressing state standards to improve teaching quality and student achievement.
Overmyer created and currently maintains the Colorado Mathematics Teachers Network, a professional learning community for Colorado mathematics educators. The network currently has nearly 400 active members. He also serves as the Technology Integration Specialist for the Colorado Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
As part of UNC's celebration of International Education Week Nov. 18-22, the Center for International Education Center will host "Global Monologues" from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 20 and is looking for members of the university community to briefly share their personal stories about international travel, a cross-cultural moment or an interesting instance pertaining to a global mindset.
The event is modeled after Moth Radio Hour on National Public Radio. You can tell, read or show (video or slide show) your funny, sad, inspiring, frustrating, romantic, sanguine or any other type of personal story. Stories should be five to 10 minutes in length.
Global Monologues will take place in the Fireside Lounge in the University Center. Available story-telling slots will be filled on a rolling basis.

The deadline to nominate UNC undergraduate students, graduate students and staff for a 2013 Engaged Scholar Award has been extended until Monday, Nov. 4. The awards recognize excellence and scholarship in the field of community-based research and learning, and community partner building.

The awards will be presented at 3 p.m. as part of the seventh annual Community Engaged Scholarship Symposium Tuesday, Nov. 12, in the University Center ballrooms.
All nominees are recognized, and the graduate and undergraduate student winners each receive a $100 gift card.
If you enjoy discussing social issues and want to explore topics like multiculturalism, power, privilege and race, don't forget to apply by Wednesday, Nov. 6, to participate in Catalyst Social Justice Retreat, which will be held Jan. 17-19 in Estes Park. Catalyst is free to all UNC students, faculty and staff.

The University Honors Program is soliciting proposals for the teaching of undergraduate Honors Connection Seminars in either the 2014-15 or 2015-16 academic year under the following course numbers:
The Honors Connections Seminars generally enroll 10-25 Honors students.
The courses must be interdisciplinary by design, and members of the faculty are encouraged to submit proposals that draw from different discipline traditions or fields of study. Courses with co-instructors are allowed, although the replacement funding must be split between the departments. Course work typically includes reading and discussions. Faculty may also require research papers, community engaged work, projects or presentations as part of the course experience.

Faculty interested in teaching an Honors Connections Seminar should submit a brief course proposal (2-3 pages) including a list of proposed assignments and readings. Please include the semester and year for the course, and if known, include the general days/times that the course would most likely be offered (e.g. Monday evenings, Tuesday/Thursdays late afternoon). Program areas can expect to receive enough part-time FTE to replace the faculty member for one regular course.
Course proposals should be received in the Honors Program office in Michener L-98 at Campus Box 13 by Dec. 1.

Through a partnership between Outdoor Pursuits and Copper Mountain Resort, UNC students, faculty and staff can purchase Copper Mountain single-day lift tickets for $60 each through Dec. 1 and for $70 after Dec. 1. Tickets are available at the Outdoor Pursuits Gear Shop in the west entrance of Harrison Hall.
There are no blackout dates and tickets are good until April 20. The number of tickets you can purchase is unlimited. The resort hopes to open Nov. 1 for skiing and snowboarding.
