New UNC Program Will Benefit Students Who ‘Pay It Forward’

A new program at the University of Northern Colorado will reward eligible students who demonstrate exceptional commitment to improving the lives of others through community volunteerism and other acts of giving back to the community.

The Phelps Family CAP Awards will annually recognize up to three students who meet financial-need and program eligibility criteria with up to $5,000 to use toward their educational expenses. CAP stands for contribute, achieve and pay it forward, the program's keystones.

The program is funded by a gift of more than $200,000 by a California family whose son graduated from UNC and is administered by the university's Office of Community and Civic Engagement.

Community leaders are welcome to join UNC faculty and staff in nominating students for a CAP award by the March 28 nomination deadline.

For complete eligibility criteria and a nomination form, visit or call the CCE office at 970-351-2458.
