Professor Co-Chairs National Committee Creating New Standards in Arts Education

Mary Schuttler

School of Theatre Arts and Dance Theatre Education Professor Mary Schuttler is part of a group of educators from around the country creating new national arts education standards.

Schuttler co-chairs the Committee on National Standards for Theatre and Drama for the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS) partnering organization whose members are writing the new, voluntary arts standards in dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts scheduled for release in 2014.

The teams in dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts met in the offices of the College Board in Reston, Va., Aug. 1-5, along with NCCAS leadership, the nine collaborating national arts and education organizations guiding the project. Each team welcomed an artist advisor from a group of nationally recognized artist advisors embedded with the writing teams to offer feedback and guidance to the respective arts groups about their work on the new arts standards.

During the August gathering, the writing teams met to review the feedback of the recently completed public review of the PreK-8 draft standards, and continue work on the high school standards and other aspects of the work. A public review of the high school drafts will begin Sept. 30, followed by a public review of the complete PreK-12 standards in January 2014.

The public will be invited to a "town hall" style meeting and streaming live "chat" in September that will include an update on the work and a summary of the data collected from the PreK-8 review. To join the September meeting or learn more about the new, voluntary arts standards, or to review video archives of previous presentations, please visit the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards website at

The new standards are expected to be completed in web form and ready for state adoption in 2014.
