Information about West Nile Virus

The campus community is reminded to take precautions such as wearing insect repellant during the West Nile Virus season following the recent discovery of mosquito samples in Weld and Larimer counties that tested positive for the virus. No cases of human illness have been reported in the area. Recommended precautions against West Nile virus include the "five Ds":

  • Drain standing water weekly, since that's where mosquitoes lay eggs.
  • Dusk and Dawn are when mosquitoes that carry the virus are most active, so limit outdoor activities or take precautions.
  • DEET is an effective ingredient to look for in insect repellents. Follow label instructions.
  • Dress in long sleeves and pants during dawn and dusk or when in areas where mosquitoes are active.
