UNC Student Takes Top Honor at Prestigious Acting Competition

Jessica Henderson, a senior Acting major, won the Irene Ryan Acting Competition at the regional Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival last week in Sacramento, Calif., and will represent UNC at the KCACT national festival April 15-21 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Henderson and five other UNC students nominated to take part in the competition traveled with their acting partners and School of Theatre Arts and Dance Director David Grapes to the campus of American River College for the festival.

Henderson and classmate Amber Cook both advanced from the starting field of 300 to the semi-final round of 32 but Cook failed to make the cut to 16 for the final round, which Henderson won.

The regional festival, part of the largest and most prestigious student acting competition in the nation, brought together nearly 1,000 students from Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, northern California, northern Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming.
