Historian of American Religion to Guest Lecture Sept. 15

Douglas Winiarski, associate professor of Religious Studies and American Studies at the University of Richmond, will present a free public lecture titled "Seized by The Jerks: Shakers, Spirit Possession, and the Great Revival on the Early American Frontier" from 4:30-6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, in Ross 1010.

Winiarski is the author of Darkness Falls on the Land of Light: Experiencing Religious Awakenings in Eighteenth-Century New England.

The illustrated lecture about an intriguing story from the American religious past with far-reaching implications for American religion today is free and open to the public courtesy of UNC's History and Anthropology departments.
