UNC History Professor Selected for Prestigious Scholars Program

University of Northern Colorado Assistant Professor of History T.J. Tomlin is one of 12 scholars from universities throughout the United States selected for the 2014-16 Young Scholars in American Religion program offered through the Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture.

In addition to honing early-career scholars' teaching and research methods through a series of seminars led by some of the nation's top religious scholars, the program offers practical advice on the tenure process, publication and grant writing.

Tomlin will be joined by scholars from the likes Duke and Stanford at the first seminar Sept. 17-21 in Indianapolis.

Tomlin, whose research focuses on the intermixing of religion and popular culture during 18th century America, also will develop a new UNC course on religion in American history as a member of the program.

He is the author of A Divinity for All Persuasions: Almanacs and Early American Religious Life, and his writing has been published in journals such as Early American Studies and The Encyclopedia of the American Enlightenment.

He's currently working on a new book chronicling the history of chance in the United States, how its meaning underwent change in the 18th century, including the introduction of lottery systems and their support of churches and government.

Call for Proposals: FRPB New Project Program

The Faculty Research and Publications Board invites faculty members who hold at least a .50 FTE appointment to submit proposals for New Project Program, with a deadline of 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17.

The program provides seed money for individual or group projects that are at the initial stages of a research or creative program. Ongoing work will not be considered for NPP funding. Preference will be given to initial or pilot work intended to result in external funding to support continuation and expansion of the research. Each NPP grant will be limited to a maximum award of $5,000.

Several University Relations Departments to Relocate

To address a shortage of office space in Carter Hall, four departments within University Relations are scheduled to move Sept. 2-3 from Carter 2009 to the Trotter House, the university-owned house across 17th Street from (north of) the Carter/Kepner Hall parking lot. The following departments will be moving:

Please be aware that staff members' access to desktop computers and phones may be limited at various times during the move. Although laptops and cell phones will be used as much as possible during the move, there may be some delays in responding to electronic messages.

Other Details

  • Phone numbers will remain the same.
  • The four departments will have a new campus box number - 45.
  • The Trotter House address is 1634 9th Ave. (corner of 9th Avenue and 17th Street)
  • Other UR staff (Chuck Leonhardt, Vicki Niccum, Nate Haas and Gary Dutmers) will remain in Carter Hall and will retain campus box 51.
  • Staff from Information Management and Technology will be moving into Carter 2009.

Nominations Now Being Accepted for 2014 Homecoming Royalty

UNC's 2014 Homecoming is Oct. 4, and the Student Alumni Association invites students, faculty and staff to nominate UNC seniors for Homecoming Royalty by 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5.
