Test of Emergency Alert System Scheduled for Sept. 18

A test of UNC's Emergency Alert Messaging System will be conducted about noon Wednesday, Sept. 18. The test message will be sent to UNC email accounts, text-enabled campus phones, subscribed cell phones (text and voice messages) and campus emergency poles. If you want to sign up to receive emergency alert messages on your cell phone or if your cell phone number changed recently, instructions are available on the Emergency Alert System website.

Faculty Recognition Reception Oct. 1

All faculty and staff are invited to attend the 2013 Faculty Recognition Reception from 3:30-5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in the University Center Panorama room. The event will honor the 2013-14 promotion and tenure appointments. A brief presentation will take place at 4 p.m.

President Kay Norton and Provost Robbyn Wacker will host the event.

RSVPs are not required.

UNC Trustees to Meet Friday, Sept. 13

The annual planning retreat for University of Northern Colorado's Board of Trustees will be held at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners Horace C. Elliott Center, 909 54th Ave., in Greeley.

Trustees will review the 2013-14 meeting schedule and discuss presidential evaluation processes as part of the roles and responsibilities of the board.

The board will take action on the recommended naming of the Carole M. Schneider Classroom at the Rocky Mountain Cancer Rehabilitation Center. Schneider, who passed away July 30 after a long battle with cancer, was co-founder of the center.

Call for Proposals: Fall Provost Awards for Travel

The Faculty Research and Publications Board invites full-time faculty to submit proposals for Provost Awards for Travel. The fall deadline is Friday, Sept. 13. Note that the maximum travel award is $5,000 and on collaborative projects, multiple recipients of a single award will split the funds. Map-Works Student Success and Early Alert Tool Available

The fall student transition survey that's part of MAP-Works (Making Achievement Possible) will be launched Sept.10-Oct. 1. Grounded in student development theory and using tested and proven algorithms to identify students who may be at-risk, Map-Works empowers faculty and staff to positively impact student success and retention and also educates students about transition-to-college issues. UNC Writing Center Now Open

UNC's Writing Center is a free service for enrolled students, faculty and staff. Representatives from the center are available to visit classes and present a brief introduction of the services offered, which include free and confidential tutoring assistance for all writing, professional writing assistance from faculty and teaching assistants and useful handouts covering almost every writing concern.

To schedule a presentation in a class, email Crystal Brothe, providing three days advance notice to facilitate scheduling.

Faculty can also refer students directly to the center, which is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday in Ross 1230. Learn more about the Writing Center at its website.
