Year-End Gift Handling: Save Postmarked Donation Envelopes

To ensure donors get credit for a gift in the 2017 tax year, please forward all gifts and the accompanying envelopes to the Foundation (Campus Box 20). The postmarked envelope is required by the IRS to give proper credit in the correct tax year for gifts via check. Because campus mail will be closed the last week of December, please begin forwarding envelopes immediately and continue into early January until all 2017 tax-year gifts are submitted. All checks received in January without an accompanying postmarked envelope, will be counted in January as 2018 tax-year gifts.

For credit card gifts, please direct all donors to the UNC Give Site at www.unco.edu/give/. For a credit card gift to count as a 2017 donation, the credit card must be charged no later than 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 31, and the website is the best utility for this purpose. Hand-written credit card numbers, regardless of postmarked date, will be counted on the day the card number is received and charged by the Foundation, which could be in 2018.

If there are any questions on end-of-year giving, further information will be available on www.unco.edu/give/.

Thank you for your assistance with year-end donations in support of UNC.

Toner Scam Alert Issued

Purchasing and Contracts reminds everyone that ink and toner for your non-Ricoh office devices (HP, Canon, Brother, Epson, etc.) must be purchased directly from the Office Depot Business website. All Ricoh toners and supplies must be ordered through Ricoh managed print contract coordinated by IM&T.

Some campus offices have recently been targets of an attempted ink and toner scam. Here's an example of how the toner scam works:

A scammer calls someone on campus, saying they're the university's regular supplier and that they noticed you're low on ink or printer toner. They then ask for the printer's serial number or model information so they can ship some unwanted ink and toner. Once they have "hooked" you, they send the merchandise, but then also send an invoice for hundreds of dollars higher than UNC would normally pay for the same toners.

Do not provide any information -- UNC VISA card numbers, serial numbers or models numbers for your printing devices -- to these callers. Terminate the call as soon as possible. Under no circumstances should you place orders for toner from any vendor that has called you to solicit such a sale.

If you receive a scam call like described above, report it to Purchasing and Contracts at 970-351-2287.

Please share this information with others in your department that should be alerted to this situation.
