Free Meningitis Vaccine Clinic for UNC, Family Members

The Student Health Center will host a free meningitis vaccine clinic from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24 (while supplies last). This one-time, special clinic is open to all UNC students, and employees and their children and/or grandchildren (over 5 years old). This vaccine normally runs around $300, but will be provided free through a partnership with Sierra's Race Against Meningitis and Campus Clinics.

The Centers for Disease Control and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommend a meningitis vaccine at ages 11 and 16. In addition, the Colorado Board of Health requires all students living on campus to have a meningitis vaccine within the last five years.

If you have a high school student that will be attending college in the fall, this would be a good time to obtain the vaccine for free.

For high-risk individuals, the CDC and ACIP have specific recommendations for the meningitis vaccine. If you or your family member is high risk, talk to your doctor to see if it is recommended before obtaining the vaccine.

Bacterial meningitis is very serious and can be deadly. Death can occur in as little as a few hours. Most people recover from meningitis. However, permanent disabilities (such as brain damage, hearing loss, and learning disabilities) can result from the infection, so we encourage you to help protect your family by getting vaccinated.

The Student Health Center is located in Cassidy Hall, 1901 10th Ave. If you have any questions about this free clinic, call Deb Miller at 970-351-1919.
