Literacy for Students with Severe and Sensory Disabilities

Introduction

This tutorial will provide theoretical foundations and practical strategies to prepare students to make reading and writing instruction meaningful and accessible for each student.   Great news! Nothing in this tutorial requires you to buy a new curriculum or reading program for that one student you are struggling to reach. There is no one size fits all here. The strategies presented focus on adaptations and accommodations that can put the individual back into individualized instruction. More importantly, there are no exceptions. This tutorial aims to help you begin every child on the path to literacy. It does not matter if they are experiencing words for the very first time or struggling to attach meaning to the words they know by rote. The ideas will promote enjoyable and meaningful access to literacy for even the most challenged students.
