Alt Tags - no wait - Effective Alt Tags

Alt Tag Tech Tips

To insert alt tags in Dreamweaver, open your Properties bar. Select the graphic to which you want to add an alt tag. On the far right side of the Properties bar is a place to insert an alt tag (we put a green circle around that area). Simply type in your effective alt tag in that little box.

Hard-coding the alt tag: For those of you who like to work with the code directly, simply add the alt descriptor in your image tag. We've highlighted that part of the code with the proper syntax below:

Alt Tag Tips

  • Keep It Simple - If your alt tag starts getting too long (over 8-10 words), your graphic probably fits into the fourth category (a content-rich graphic), which needs to be treated a little differently.

  • For Action Graphics, begin your alt tag with a VERB. You are wanting your user to DO something, so convey that action in the alt tag you write.

  • Always ask "What purpose is this graphic serving?"

And now for something really big . . .
