Pop-Up IEP

Collaborate with your child’s O&M Specialist* to educate the school staff about the efficiency and effectiveness of the white cane. Give examples of persons who are blind or visually impaired who use a long, white cane to travel effectively and independently.
Help your child become comfortable with using the white cane by introducing and encouraging its use at home. Give lots of practice!
The school district is not responsible for purchasing a white cane for your child, but they often do while the child is receiving orientation and mobility instruction. A white cane can be purchased from a variety of sources. (See Additional Information and Resources at the end of this document.)
If you disagree with the IEP, make sure to include a written statement noting your objections. Unless indicated otherwise, signing the IEP indicates attendance, but not necessarily agreement.
