Pop-Up IEP

Work with your child’s TVI and O&M Specialist* to educate school staff about the efficiency and effectiveness of using specialized devices and skills. Share examples of persons who are blind or visually impaired who use a variety of tools effectively.
Have staff meet at least one person who is blind or has low vision who is gainfully employed and lives/travels independently.
Children can be encouraged toward the goal of regular, comfortable, and proficient use of specialized techniques and tools. Consider having your child take responsibility for his/her own achievement as a goal in the IEP.
Help your child become comfortable with using specialized skills and devices by introducing and encouraging their use at home. Give lots of practice!
Have your child’s teacher work closely with the TVI and O&M Specialist* to come up with solutions and strategies that might encourage your child to “like” her devices or at least see the value in their use.
If you disagree with the IEP, make sure to include a written statement noting your objections. Unless indicated otherwise, signing the IEP indicates attendance, but not necessarily agreement.
