UNC is undergoing a comprehensive review of Athletics as part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I certification process required by the governing body of intercollegiate athletics. The certification process consists of a self-study followed by a site visit from the NCAA. The completed self-study addresses the main tenets of NCAA certification: governance and commitment to rules compliance; academic integrity; and equity and student welfare. More than 70 UNC faculty, staff, students, student-athletes and alumni collaborated on the report. UNC submitted the self-study to the NCAA on May 15, and an NCAA review team will visit campus Oct. 16-18. A decision on UNC's certification status will be made public by the NCAA in Spring 2007.
