To the University Community:
This is the second in a series of bulletins on preparation at UNC for
the NCA accreditation review. Thanks in advance for your willingness
to learn more about the University's preparation for its review by the
Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges
and Schools (NCA). This bulletin focuses on the groups and individuals
at UNC who have guided preparation thus far.
1. University-Wide Self-Study Steering Committee. The university-wide
Self-Study Steering Committee has offered oversight of the NCA preparation
since March 2002. The Steering Committee played essential roles in the
design of the process, in collection of information for reports, and
in revision of reports. The Steering Committee decided to adopt the
new criteria rather than use the preceding criteria, which are being
phased out gradually by NCA. Composition of the Steering Committee has
remained stable since 2002; a few replacements and additions have been
made to broaden representation and replace faculty and staff after departures
and re-organizations within the University. Membership on the Self-Study
Steering Committee is as follows:

4. The University Community. This means you! Involvement in the self-study
is welcome from the entire University community. As we move closer to
the site visit from the NCA consultant evaluators (Sept. 20-22, 2004),
it will become increasingly important for the University to consider
ways in which the NCA criteria apply to all operations on campus. When
the documents have been edited, we will be posting them to the University
website and asking everyone to learn more about the contents of the
reports and to submit any suggestions they would like to offer.
Please take a moment to extend your thanks to one or more individuals
listed in this bulletin as having contributed to preparation for the
NCA review. These faculty, students, staff, and administrators have
worked diligently to represent the University in an accurate and positive
light; they have also sought ways to seek continuous improvement for
the University.
