Native American Professors at UNC

Dr. Enrique:

Dr. Enrique Maestas is a member of the Chi’en Nde, the Red River Apache north of Taos, New Mexico.  Dr. Maestas was born in Denver, Colorado and received the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Ethnic Studies from the University of Colorado at Boulder in May, 1996.  In December, 1998, he received the degree of Master of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin and the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy from the same institution in May, 2003.  Presently, Dr. Maestas is a lecturer at the University of Northern Colorado for the anthropology program, Hispanic Studies, and Africana Studies and is affiliated with Native American Student Services.  

Dr. Enrique Maestas compiled extensive data in regard to Native American history and culture of Texas published as a doctoral dissertation for the University of Texas at Austin.  Dr. Maestas is continuing research into the foods, medicines, and religious traditions of south Texas with the Lipan Apache Band of Texas.  Presently, Dr. Maestas is working in conjunction with Dr. Kimball in building a support and client base for the Indigenous Knowledge Mapper as a research, teaching, and learning aid.  Recently, Dr. Maestas has been asked to work with colleagues at the University of California at Santa Barbara in establishing a Lipan Apache language revitalization program based on the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation of New Mexico that would greatly benefit from the logistic and technical support that IKMapper can provide.  Dr. Maestas has been trained in the Borderlands Program with the Center for Mexican American Studies and the Institute of Latin American Studies at UT Austin.  He has also engaged the study of race and ethnicity and sits on the advisory boards for the American Indian Genocide Museum and the Museo Guadalupe Aztlan in Houston, Texas.    

 

Dr. Murry:

Murry

Dr. Francie R. Murry is a Professor in the School of Special Education. She attended Central Washington University for her B.A. in Elementary Education and Special Education, her earned her M.A. in Special Education, and her Ph.D. in Special Education at the University of Virginia.  Dr. Murry taught K-12 grades in public schools and private juvenile facilities for 10 years in Washington and Virginia.  In addition to her 15 years at UNC, she has also taught at the University of Wyoming and at Central Washington University.  Her area of expertise is youth with challenging behaviors which cause academic problems.
