Native American Students Learning Institute Overview
Students from less represented populations face unique obstacles upon entering institutions of higher learning. This year-long pilot program seeks to enhance traditional curriculum for University of Northern Colorado freshmen by promoting academic readiness and excellence. Many of these students that come from less represented populations have unique difficulties adjusting socially and academically to university life. As a result these challenges often impact retention rates and students’ satisfaction within institutions of higher learning. This institute is targeting new UNC and transfer students. Students will receive three additional hours of instruction per week in the following subject areas: writing, research, life skills, and leadership. During the first semester, students will take writing and life skills, followed by leadership and research skills in the second semester. To satisfy student’s innate desire to learn, this institute will also provide peer mentors that work at NASS and other student groups. This increased attention to student needs and curriculum design will provide necessary skills to achieve both personal and academic goals.
