What is the McNair Scholars Program?
We’re a federally funded TRIO program whose goal is to prepare students for Ph.D. programs. If you are eligible for the program, you will spend your junior and senior year gaining the skills and experiences highly desired by graduate programs.

Who is eligible to be a McNair Scholar?

  • Juniors and seniors with a 3.0 or higher G.P.A.;
  • First generation college student and income eligible OR Member of underrepresented population in graduate programs (African American, Hispanic, or Native American);
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident; and
  • Committed to completing a doctoral degree.

What are the benefits to becoming a McNair Scholar?

  • 2-semester research seminar (2 credits each semester);
  • Six-week funded summer research internship (stipend plus room and board);
  • Graduate admissions preparation workshops;
  • Academic and career advising (Individual Success Plan);
  • Oral and poster presentations at regional and national conferences;
  • Faculty mentor from your discipline to guide your research; and
  • Publication in the McNair Research Journal.

In addition to these benefits, McNair Scholars are in high demand at graduate programs nationwide. As a McNair Scholar, you will attain the skills graduate programs want. Over 170 universities and colleges across the U.S. offer substantial incentives to McNair Scholars such as
• Fee waivers for admission applications;
• Graduate assistantships and scholarships; and
• Graduate fellowships ranging from $3,000 - $21,000.

How do I apply?
Applications are accepted each year from February 1 to spring break. You can apply on-line or by visiting the McNair Scholars Program in Michener L75.
