Jessica Montoya
I am Jessica Montoya, a senior at University of Northern Colorado, and also a McNair Scholar. I am a Psychology major, and my research interests lie in understanding more about the neurotransmitters/neurohormones that the brain creates and the effects these have on the rest of the body. After completing my B.A. with UNC, I plan on going to medical school to receive an M.D./PhD. Following medical school, I would like to practice medicine for a while, and then share my knowledge with others at a teaching hospital. |

Vanessa Corbett
I’m a psychology major and a junior at UNC. I come from many places in Colorado, from Colorado Springs to Greeley, as well as Pittsburgh, PA. For simplicity’s sake, I’ll leave my hometown as being Colorado Springs where all of my recent adolescent development has occurred.
As I mentioned previously I am a psychology major. I love everything about psychology and I’m learning more about it each day from the brilliant professors that teach us. I’ve been headed in the direction of clinical psychology for a long time; however I’m starting to broaden my interests back into physiological psychology and neuropsychology. I say “back into” because I spent many hours in middle school and high school looking over pictures of the brain and learning all of the distinct parts of it and the functions they performed.
My ultimate goal is to help people and to offer something dynamic to the field of psychology – the goal is non-specific, but I will achieve it whichever way I best am able.
Making the McNair program has been one of few achievements I’ve been able to say I’m proud to be a part of, and I am extremely proud and excited to be participating in this group that will aid me in successfully pursuing my goal of going to graduate school.

Jessica James
Hello Everyone!!! I am a Biology major with an emphasis in Biomedical Sciences. I born in Houston, TX but raised most of my life in Denver, CO. My academic goals are to attain a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences and soon after enter into Medical School to pursue a M.D. in emergency surgery. I am very proud and humbled by the opportunity to join the ranks of 2007-2008 McNair Scholars. Although I am a work in progress, I aspire to pursue other dreams while navigating my way through life’s journey. These dreams include: becoming a motivational speaker for inner city youth, as well as becoming a children’s book author (and doing the illustrations!) I am inspired by history and phenomenal lives…such as that of Ronald McNair! |

My major is Spanish for secondary education with an endorsement in ESL. I was born in Mexico but my family and I moved to Fort Morgan, Colorado when I was 9 years old. My academic and career goals are to graduate from UNC and begin working as a teacher while continuing my education. I would like to go to graduate school and obtain a PhD or Ed.D because, eventually, I want to become a professor and provide innovative research in my discipline and also provide training for ESL/Bilingual teachers. |

Hi! I am from Loveland, Colorado. I am a double major in History Secondary Education and Spanish with an endorsement in Bilingual Education. After completing my degrees, I plan on going to graduate school for a master’s degree in Latin American history. I am very passionate about becoming an inspirational teacher and helping to improve education at the secondary level. I hope to someday teach in a Spanish-speaking country. I love to read, but I think that the absolute best way to learn is through travel. |

Edward Lopez
My name is Edward Lopez and I was born in Big Spring, Texas and raised in Loveland, Colorado. I have chosen Mexican American Studies as my major with the intentions of also pursuing a Masters degree in Educational Leadership. My professional goal is to become a retention advisor and dedicate my career in assisting and developing student morale, motivation, educational goals and aspirations for higher education within our community.
In a previous chapter of my life, I had aspired to become a professional singer. Throughout the years I have had the wonderful honor and opportunity of singing in many professional choirs, competitions, and groups. One memorable highlight included the opportunity of working with various artists such as Selena and John Secada at an International music competition I participated in Miami, Florida. Though music is still an important aspect of my life, I now embrace the value and importance of a higher education. I am eager to fulfill my educational endeavors and to ultimately pursue a career that is just as meaningful and dear to me as music. |

Megan Woodruff
Home Town: I was born in Phoenix, AZ. Then my family moved to Modesto, CA when I was 6 years old. When I was 11, we moved to Highlands Ranch, CO.
Major: Psychology; Minor: Criminal Justice.
Academic and Professional goals: I would like to get my PhD in Clinical Psychology. After that, I want to work as a psychologist. Eventually, I would like to open my own private practice.
Accomplishment: I am most proud of what I have achieved with my sorority, Sigma Kappa. We received the award of "Highest Overall Greek GPA" and "Highest Sorority GPA" two years in a row. Also, this summer we received a national award from Sigma Kappa's headquarter for raising the most money per woman for our philanthropy, Alzheimer's Foundation. We pride ourselves on being unique individuals and well-rounded women. This is also something we continuously strive for. I feel as if we are breaking negative stereotypes of sororities and of Greek life in general, this is something I am proud to be a part of. |

I am currently attending UNC for my fourth year. I am an Economics-English double major with a strong passion for music. Though there have been many struggles that have occurred in my life during the years that I have attended UNC, I am proud to say that I have made it through with the help of my family and friends. From a young age, my family has continually moved, but after attending UNC I have found a stable place where I am able to fit in and thrive. I am excited to begin this semester with the tools to discover things that I am passionate about. The McNair Scholars program is a blessing that I will use to the best of my ability, and I am proud to be able to embark on a mission that aims to help me develop as a scholar as well as add to the academic community. |
