Greetings!

It’s my pleasure to welcome you to our McNair Scholars Program website.

I grew up in Newcastle, Wyoming, a small town of about 3,000 people located in northeastern Wyoming, right at the edge of the Black Hills. I earned my master’s degree in student personnel services from South Dakota State University and my bachelor’s degree in business administration at Black Hills State University.  My husband and I moved to Greeley four years ago in order for me to pursue my PhD in Higher Education & Student Affairs Leadership right here at Northern Colorado. We’ve enjoyed our experiences here near the Rocky Mountains greatly! Currently, I am in the process of writing my dissertation, which is a qualitative phenomenological study exploring the motivations and inspirations of McNair faculty mentors who come from first-generation backgrounds to serve as mentors within the McNair Scholars Program.

Prior to joining the McNair Scholars Program, I’ve been an academic advisor, career counselor, orientation coordinator, and admissions counselor, as well as working with student retention initiatives. While at Black Hills State University, I also had the opportunity to work closely with the Student Support Services and Upward Bound programs, both members of the TRIO family. Working with college students has always been a truly rewarding and enriching experience!

If I can be of assistance to you in providing further information about the UNC McNair Scholars Program, I hope you’ll feel free to contact me. Stop by to introduce yourself. We’re located in Michener L-75. You can also reach me at 351-2744 or by email at sarah.chase@unco.edu.

I am a first-generation college student currently completing my Ph.D. In School Psychology with a doctoral minor in Applied Statistics and Research Methods. I am presently working on my dissertation research regarding the life experiences of youth who experience incarceration. My other research interests include homeless or unaccompanied youth, the long-term impacts of neurodevelopment, and prevention and  intervention strategies for working with high-need and underrepresented youth.

Greetings and welcome!  It is a distinct honor to work with you as the McNair Scholars Program GA!  It wasn’t that long ago that I was a McNair Scholar myself.  And what a program; so much I was able to take away from such a magnificent program backed by an extremely positive and knowledgeable staff!  I am currently in UNC’s Exercise Science program with an emphasis in Exercise Physiology, working toward my master’s degree.  I work with an incredible team of exercise physiologists to alleviate the cardiotoxic and bone degenerative effects of chemotherapy drugs using exercise as the protective intervention.  Our research utilizes both an animal model as well as a human model for a well-rounded and complete analysis.  I grew up on a farm and ranch in the northeast corner of Colorado, fostered in a small, tight-knit community whose characteristics I treasure and reflect.  Over the course of my academic life, I have been surrounded by many extremely inspiring and supportive people who pushed me to my limits to excel because they recognized potential I’d missed.  Therefore, I aspire to one day, inspire and motivate my own students, as my many mentors have inspired me, from my own collegiate laboratory or classroom setting!  Life: live it, explore it, love it, celebrate it!

Currently, I am enrolled in the PhD School Psychology Program. I’m from Peoria, IL, which is about 200 miles south of Chicago. I am the oldest of 4 brothers and 1 sister. My research interests are resilience characteristics/traits in abused and minority adolescents. My long-term goal is to conduct research on the efficacy of resilience programs and allow that research to fuel the creation of my own program model. I look forward to working with you all throughout the school year and if you have any questions, please feel free to stop by the office anytime.
