McNair Research Seminar

One of the best ways you can prepare for graduate school is by learning to conduct graduate level research. In the McNair Research Seminar, you will have the opportunity to

  • Understand the professional value of conducting research as an undergraduate.
  • Learn what kinds of research or scholarly contributions people in your field are interested in.
  • Understand the basic research traditions and some of the technical terminology associated with each research tradition.
  • Learn the steps for conducting a research project.
  • Learn how to efficiently search for and evaluate resources related to your topic.
  • Become aware of the personal and professional skills necessary for graduate school success including the ethics and scholarly responsibilities of academic work.
  • Learn the standards for oral and written research presentations.
  • Complete a faculty-guided research project resulting in a written report of your findings.

The McNair Research Seminar meets once a week for two hours during the academic year. McNair Scholars enroll in the course fall and spring during their first year in the program and receive 2 credits each semester.
