Deaf Mentor Training

The Deaf Mentor Training is an eight day experience where Deaf individuals gain and apply knowledge of language mentoring.
The first three days focus on training Deaf individuals. The Deaf individuals will attend classes where they learn about topics related to mentoring. These topics include using technology, providing feedback to students, writing educational objectives and setting up a mentoring business.
The last five days the mentors will apply mentoring skills with ASL students who are attending an ASL Immersion event. Mentors will attend morning seminars where they will see what the Immersion participants are learning. Then mentors will find ways to weave skill improvement into afternoon fieldtrips and non-classroom activities. Evenings are open to continue the learning process during fun activities that allow all to socialize.
Everything is focused towards putting mentoring knowledge and skills into action, while the group is together and has access to the Master Deaf Language Mentors who will be teaching the program; national renowned ASL teachers Jimmy Beldon and Betti Bonni.
The Deaf Mentor Training event is co-hosted by the MARIE Center and the CATIE Center (sister educational center). The training is alternately hosted at either St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN or the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO in early June.
If you live in the MARIE region (AR, CO, LA, MT, NM, ND, OK, SD, TX, UT and WY), apply through the MARIE Center and are selected, MARIE will cover a portion of the total cost to attend.
