Off the Court and onto
the Playground

Devon Beitzel, guard on the UNC men’s basketball team, stands ready to spring into action when the whistle blows. His opponent is a first grader from Shawsheen Elementary School who’s ready to take him on in a Field Day race.

Along with the rest of the team, Devon spent time with students from Greeley schools, helping them with homework, playing with them at recess and showing them what they could achieve with hard work and determination.

After all, that’s how Devon carved his path to UNC. In addition to an offer to play basketball, Devon chose the university because of its quality business programs and the professors’ dedication to their students.

During his time at UNC, Devon excelled not only as an athlete, leading the Bears to their first NCAA tournament, but also as a student. He worked hard to maintain a 3.7 GPA – earning him the title of Academic All-American. As a double major in Accounting and Finance, Devon showed strength both on the court and in the classroom. With such a busy schedule, he learned how to budget his time and strike a balance between academics and athletics.

If you ask Devon, he’ll tell you that he achieved everything he wanted to while he was at UNC. With the discipline he gained from basketball, the patience he found volunteering and the skills he received from his classes and internships, he earned an accounting job at Ernst & Young in Denver.
