University Archives: Archives Studies - v.22: Academic Administration at the School, College and the University of Northern Colorado: 1889-2000
Colorado State Normal School 1889-1911:
In 1889 there were four faculty members and one president, no departments, divisions, schools or colleges. Everyone taught subjects that included: education, science, English, history, geography, mathematics and music.
By 1891 the school's catalog shows that departmental organizations had been created. These departments comprised the Normal School's academic administration.
   1. The Model/Training School is the only department which appears in all catalogs (1890-1911).
2. The Professional Dept. is listed in catalogs from 1891-1897. Curriculum includes education and pedagogy. After 1897, these subjects are offered by the Normal Dept.
3. The Academic Dept. is also listed in the 1891-1897 catalogs. The curriculum includes all subjects except education, i.e. mathematics, language, science, geography, music, art, woodworking, Kindergarten, etc.
After a reorganization in 1897, there was a different configuration of departments:
1. The Model/Training School Dept. continues.
2. The Normal Dept. curriculum combines the previous Professional (education) and Academic departments.
3. The Kindergarten Dept. which had been part of the Academic Dept. becomes a separate department and remains so throughout the rest of the Normal School period.
4. Music sometimes appears as a separate unit, but in most years it is a part of the Normal Dept.
5. The Library Dept. is listed as a separate dept. in a few of the 1897-1911 catalogs. Courses in book binding and library practice are parts of the Normal Dept. curriculum during years when the subject is not designated as a separate department.
6. The High School Department first appears in the catalogs in 1902. It retains departmental status through the Normal School period (1911).
The Graduate School formed in 1911. First degrees were awarded in 1913.

State Teachers College of Colorado 1911-1935:
Prior to 1924, the college catalogs listed Training School curriculum in great detail.  Little space was devoted to the college courses.
The departmental rather than divisional structure of course offerings extend throughout the STC period.  General groupings into what were to become divisions are in evidence from 1924 on.  Dr. George Frasier began his presidency in 1924.
  Divisional designations were given to:
Junior College (2 year program)
Senior College (last 2 years of a  4 year program)
High School (part of the Training School Dept.)
Elementary School (part of the Training School Dept.)
The Extension Dept. was listed in all catalogs from 1911-1931.  Its mission was to improve education within the State of Colorado.
The Graduate School occupied prominent portions of the catalogs for most years.

Colorado State College of Education 1935-1957:

*Since there were no catalogs from 1943-1945, programs listed as starting in 1945 or ending in 1943 may have started or ended in the intervening years.
Course offerings for existing divisions were listed under two colleges from 1935-42.  The colleges were:
1935-1942 General College (2 year course)
1935-1942 Professional College (last 2 years of 4 year course)
After 1942, all courses offered by each division were listed under divisional categories.
