SERIES 6 Colorado Academic Libraries Book Processing Center (CALBPC)

This series contains essentially all materials concerning the operation of the Colorado Libraries Book Processing Center including minutes and correspondence of various committees affiliated with it.

The Colorado Libraries Book Processing Center was an experiment to ascertain the feasibility of establishing a Technical Processing Center to serve state supported academic libraries.  In 1966, the National Science Foundation awarded the University of Colorado and the Council of Librarians a grant of $54,000, and member libraries contributed $10,500 to the project.  The member libraries were: Colorado University, Metropolitan State College, Colorado State University, Adams State College, Colorado School of Mines, Southern Colorado State College and Colorado State College.

The purpose was to process books through the Library of Congress automated classification system.  The objective was to deliver to a central point books ordered by the member libraries, to catalog, classify, process and prepare the books, appropriate records and cards, and to forward the completely processed books and catalog cards to the requesting library.

The project was in operation from 1967-1973.  It terminated in 1973 because of lack of funding and the high cost of the processing.
