RG13 The Library
S14 Library Art Exhibits

James A. Michener Library art exhibits began in 1973. The purpose of the exhibits is to add another learning dimension for students, enhance the Library through art, and provide exposure and publicity for artists. Community involvement is also a factor, and invitations are circulated to a wide audience.

The Friends of the UNC Libraries support the exhibits. They purchased the panels and track lights for the Corridor Gallery west and south of the Library's administrative suite. The Friends host the receptions and provide refreshments. The cost of beverages is provided by the UNC Foundation. Items exhibited are insured by the University. The artists are responsible for delivery and dismantling of their work.

In 1995, the main gallery in the southeast corner of the main floor was dedicated as the "Mari Michener Gallery" in memory of James A. Michener's wife. The third gallery space is on the outer walls of the mezzanine. Wall space in the lower level ceased to be used for exhibits when staff was transferred from the area. Exhibit cases presented to the library by Professor Emeritus A. M. Winchester are used, as well as several owned by the Library. There are door-sized portable panels for hanging smaller items.

The Exhibits Coordinator develops the exhibit schedule, usually months in advance, works with the Information Service on copy for announcements, develops publicity for use in local, University and area newspapers, hangs and dismantles the exhibits, and coordinates the receptions.

Glen Alps Exhibit, 1985

The Glen Alps collagraph print exhibit, September 23-November 3, 1985, was a special exhibit. Exhibit Coordinator Betty Mooso and Visual Arts Chairman Dik Munson collaborated to secure a grant to bring Glen Alps' work to the campus. A joint exhibition was held in the Visual Arts John Mariani and Michener Library galleries. The Mariani gallery featured a retrospective of his work.

Glen Alps was a graduate of UNC class of '40. He was a leader in art education and retired from a position as chairman of the printmaking department (which he founded) at the University of Washington. He gained an international reputation as an artist and for his innovative printmaking techniques. His collagraphy and burnt lacquer plate printing concepts are used universally by printmakers.

Alps was nominated for an Honored Alumnus award by Ms. Mooso and Dr. Munson and received the Trailblazer award at the Homecoming banquet November 1, 1985. His work was on exhibit at that time and receptions were held at both Mariani and Michener.

The File contains publicity information, news stories, exhibit brochure, poster, Homecoming "You can do Magic!" program, "The Collagraph" a film script by Glen Alps, and exhibit information. Also on File is the catalog from his 1980 Bellevue Art Museum, Bellevue, Washington, retrospective exhibit. The prints from that exhibit were a part of the Michener exhibit.

Alps conducted a workshop on campus prior to his Homecoming exhibits. He audio taped the workshop and donated a set of the tapes for the File.
