The Curriculum Committee was established in May 1965 by the Constitution of the Colorado State College Faculty.  The Dean of the College was designated as the permanent chairman of the committee.  Representatives of the various departments were elected by those departments to serve on the committee.  The Dean of the Graduate School, a representative of the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate, and a professional librarian were designated as ex officio members of the committee.

The functions of the Curriculum committee were to: (1) Recommend to the Faculty Senate policies and standards for programs and courses; (2) Make decisions concerning all courses referred to it by divisions; (3) Request needed course modifications and deletions to the divisions and departments; (4) Consider and prepare policy statements concerning curricula patterns in the college as the committee deems necessary; and (5) Report to the Faculty Senate in written summary form its major policy actions at least once a year.

FILE 5 Instructor Course Unit Committee (ICU)

The Instructor Course Unit program was an innovative program begun in 1973.  It was approved by President Bond and the Faculty Senate on March 26, 1973.  A chairman, Wanda Brewer of the English Department, was appointed and ten faculty committee members elected to begin tenure the summer quarter of 1973.  Elections to the committee were run by the Senate Election Committee.  The ICU  program was a significant part of the curriculum through 1978, and numbers of ICU courses were taken over by individual departments and listed through the 1980-81 catalog.

The program was interdisciplinary and was part of the general education curriculum.  Courses designed by one or more instructors could be proposed to the committee, which considered each proposal.  One of the purposes of the program was to allow faculty members to teach courses in areas that interested them and which did not fit nicely into the more standard curriculum.  Two documents, "The Instructor Course Unit: Areas of Responsibility" and a Memo from the ICU Committee to Members of the University Faculty dated September 15, 1976, set out the rational and the rules governing the ICU's.

This file includes minutes of the committee from the Fall of 1973 through January 1975.  Many of the minutes contain information and discussion of proposals for ICU courses.  Additional information can be found in the University Bulletin (catalog) of 1975-76 that lists some 59 individual courses with the names of the instructors.

Two ICU courses were required of each undergraduate for fulfillment of the general education requirement.  The areas were: Communications, Professional and Applied Studies, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Humanities and Integrative Studies, and Sciences.

The file also contains memos written by the Library representative to the ICU committee for the period from January through June 1977.

FILE 7 Faculty Fund for Student Aid

The Faculty Fund for Student Aid was begun as early as 1969.  The earliest item in the folder is a June 1969 request for faculty to contribute through payroll deduction.  1% or 1/2% of take-home salary was requested of contributors by the planning committee (no names given).  Contributions were to be placed in a special account W401-201 and administered by a faculty Board of Directors.  During the middle 1970s, Robert Ross of the Department of Speech Communication was chair of the committee, and the Ombudsman, William Mitchell, was involved in the administration of the Fund.  There were monthly reports of grants and payments, and there are reports of the meetings of the committee.

In 1977, the fund was apparently turned over to the office of the Dean of Students.  In December 1986, JoEllen Robinson of that office reported that approximately $120 per month was being contributed to the Fund from payrolls.  Most loans were being used for books at the beginning of each quarter when other student loans had not come through in time, and holds were put on student accounts if the Fund loans were not repaid.  Consideration was made for limiting the Fund to that purpose.  The few emergency loans, signed for by the Dean of Students, required two to five days, as they had to go through the University accounting office.
