A special meeting of the Trustees was held on November 10, 1986, to discuss and decide upon a request made by President Robert Dickeson for a one-year leave of absence. Dickeson had been asked by incoming Governor Romer to serve as his Chief of Staff. The request was granted and the need for an interim president was established.
Dr. Richard Davis was selected on December 10, 1986 as Acting President for one year as of January 1, 1987. He served until August 29 when President Dickeson, who had asked that his leave be cancelled and he be allowed to return to UNC, took back his position. Dr. Davis was provided with a separate home as Dr. Dickeson remained in the President's house during his period with the Governor. |
